Join instructor Mary Chauvel for
Fundamentals of Drawing, a 12-week class meeting on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the Brazosport Art League studio. The class starts Wednesday, March 5 and runs through May 21, and the registration fee for the entire 12 weeks is $340 for BAL members and $350 for non-members.
Drawing is the most crucial foundation for any artistic practice. This course is taught by Academy of Art graduate, Mary Chauvel. Fundamentals of drawing include analysis of form, use of line, understanding value, and rendering.
Course Overview:
Learn how to draw and render forms, create texture and expand use of your materials. In this course you will study the basic shapes and end with an intro to figure drawing (figure will be clothed). Students will receive peer critiques and instructor critiques.
*students may also work in pastel or watercolor for this course if that is their personal preference.

Lessons Overview:
Week 1- Contour Drawing, Intro to Materials
Going over materials, their uses, and storage. Students will complete a contour drawing of a still life.
Week 2 - Value Scale, Value Patterns
Learn the 9-step value scale, learn to apply smooth value transitions to draw a sphere.
Week 3 - Drawing Basic Forms (sphere, cylinder, cone, and cube)
Week 4 - Simple Still Life Study, Composition
Students will draw a still life with foam shapes and simple objects while learning the basics of still life composition.
Week 5 - Still Life Session 1 (nice paper)
Long drawing, beginning of a two week long still life drawing.
Week 6 - Still Life Session 2 (continue previous drawing), Texture
Continue still life drawing, applying texture and finishing up.
Week 7- Critique, David Bust Session 1 (nice paper)
Peer critique of still life drawing, intro to portrait drawing. Begin blocking out David bust.
Week 8 - David Bust Session 2 (continue previous drawing)
Begin rendering David (value transitions, edge control).
Week 9 - Finish Bust Drawing, Critique, Intro to Figurative Drawing
Final touches (if needed) for bust drawing. Peer critique. Basics of figurative drawing.
Week 10 - Quick Studies, 2-3 Figure Sessions *live figure
One-two minute quick studies, 10-20 minute long sessions.
Week 11 - Quick Studies, 1 Long Figure Session *live figure
One-two minute quick studies, 1 long figure session.
Week 12 - Final Portfolio Critique
Review all drawings completed during the course.
