"Fundamentals of Drawing" art class

Join instructor Mary Chauvel for Fundamentals of Drawing, a 12-week class meeting on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the Brazosport Art League studio. The class starts Wednesday, March 5 and runs through May 21, and the registration fee for the entire 12 weeks is $340 for BAL members and $350 for non-members. Drawing is the most crucial foundation for any artistic practice. This course is taught by Academy of Art graduate, Mary Chauvel. Fundamentals of drawing include analysis of form, use of line, understanding value, and rendering.   Course Overview: Learn how to draw and render forms, create texture and expand use of your materials. In this course you will study the basic shapes and end with an intro to figure drawing (figure will be clothed). Students will receive peer critiques and instructor critiques. *students may also work in pastel or watercolor for this course if that is their personal preference. Ages: 16 and up Length: 12 weeks Time: 2 hour sessions Cost: $340 for full course for BAL members; $350 for non-members *Fee covers cost of figure model   Supply List:

  Lessons Overview: Week 1- Contour Drawing, Intro to Materials Going over materials, their uses, and storage. Students will complete a contour drawing of a still life. Week 2 - Value Scale, Value Patterns Learn the 9-step value scale, learn to apply smooth value transitions to draw a sphere. Week 3 - Drawing Basic Forms (sphere, cylinder, cone, and cube) Week 4 - Simple Still Life Study, Composition Students will draw a still life with foam shapes and simple objects while learning the basics of still life composition. Week 5 - Still Life Session 1 (nice paper) Long drawing, beginning of a two week long still life drawing. Week 6 - Still Life Session 2 (continue previous drawing), Texture Continue still life drawing, applying texture and finishing up. Week 7- Critique, David Bust Session 1 (nice paper) Peer critique of still life drawing, intro to portrait drawing. Begin blocking out David bust. Week 8 - David Bust Session 2 (continue previous drawing) Begin rendering David (value transitions, edge control). Week 9 - Finish Bust Drawing, Critique, Intro to Figurative Drawing Final touches (if needed) for bust drawing. Peer critique. Basics of figurative drawing. Week 10 - Quick Studies, 2-3 Figure Sessions *live figure One-two minute quick studies, 10-20 minute long sessions. Week 11 - Quick Studies, 1 Long Figure Session *live figure One-two minute quick studies, 1 long figure session. Week 12 - Final Portfolio Critique Review all drawings completed during the course.

Teen Guild is for teens ages 12 – 18 interested in theater, both onstage and offstage. We meet the 3rd Sunday of each month from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (except as noted below). We work on different theater skills to expose participants to all aspects of theater.

Every summer, we have a 2-week theater workshop in early June that culminates in 2 fabulous performances. The students do it all: acting, lights, set, costumes and makeup.  The cost is $200 for the workshop. Stay tuned for dates and information about registration.

Join Brazosport Center Stages this spring for the 4th annual Penguin Project production, Aladdin KIDS, on stage May 9-11! Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 PM and the Sunday matinee starts at 2:30 PM in the Freeport LNG Theater. Tickets are $20. Penguin Project is a unique program for artists with special needs, ages 10-21. The project serves to facilitate joint participation between these young artists and same-age peers through a community theater experience. Peer mentors work side-by-side with their artist partners and assist throughout the rehearsal and performance process. Find out more about Penguin Project on our website!
